To properly fit a stirrup:  When foot with shoe is in the stirrup, the ball of the foot is on the tread and the foot is over to one side: “There must be 15-20 mm or 1/2 to 3/4 inch to spare when the foot is in the stirrup over to one side” Pony Club Gear Check Guidelines -Jan 2006.  (Or I would like to say: A finger width on either side of the foot.)

Track Rider’s Horror Dragging Ordeal.
This dragging incident at Sandown on 6th October 2004 follows another near fatal dragging incident whereby Matthew Palmer was dragged for 100m and blacked out. When he came too Matthew said he had no feeling from his waist down and thought he was paralyzed. Fortunately Matthew only suffered severe bruising.
Matthew has since been using Track Toe Stoppers and said "They are good - Too good!" because he was concerned if he had to ride another trainers horse without Toe Stoppers. Matthew also used the Race Toe Stoppers last Saturday 2nd October 2004.

 Hi Cathy,

First---just wanted to follow up and say that our new spring loaded stirrup swivels are FANTASTIC!  They are doing exactly what I needed them to do to save my knees.  When my husband saw them he said, "Where did you get these?  They look like something I would make!"  We are very appreciative of the husband/wife team that made these.

Second---the print catalog is wonderful.  Not only do you have great products--but the stories, recipes and pictures are totally charming!  If you have an extra copy, my friend Cindy would probably love one.  She is a horsewoman with some serious shopping habits!!  Her address:  .........

Thank you again for your help. A new and loyal customer,

Twisted Stirrup:  Another super idea from those Icelandic folks up North.  Leave it to them to come up with a with a stirrup that puts no strain on your knees, elevating the annoying twisting of your body as you lean over to get your foot properly placed into the stirrup iron.  Not to mention you will have no hassle in finding your stirrup with your foot.  Sold in pairs with a white footpad.  4 3/4 inches wide with a one inch leather opening.  Sold as a pair.HVF Exclusive Item # ST-IR - Price $50.00

The MDC Intelligent Stirrup:  Are patented and revolutionary in design.  These irons allow riders the choice of three positions: Traditional, 45 or 90 degrees. This will allow you to customize your stirrups to the setting that best suits you, your horse and your riding application. They relieve pain in your ankles, knees, hips and back plus reduce pressure across the front of the shin as well as reducing leg burns and pinching.  Now you can put your stirrups where you want them and have them work with your body and not against it.  The stirrups are easily retrievable (that is they are easy to catch with your foot), making your performance more precise and much safer. Additionally, the open stirrup angles greatly reduce the danger of being hung up and seriously injured. Each model comes with the patented, adjustable top, which means that your stirrup is waiting for your foot just as soon as you swing your leg over the saddle. What angle to select?
Traditional,
This allows you to easily run up your irons. 45 Degrees: Once the rider presets the stirrups at 45 degrees, instantly they notice that the leather is applying ½ the pressure across their shin as a normal stirrup. This reduction in leather pressure reduces leg burns, but still gives the rider who relies on this pressure the feeling that they desire. Should the rider lose their iron, the stirrup will tend to leave a clear opening making the stirrup easily retrievable. This increase in stirrup retrieval puts the rider back in control and allows them to proceed and compete at their highest possible efficiency. This setting is seems to be the preferable preset angle for Show Jumpers and Event Riders.  90 Degrees: Results in no leather pressure across the shin and leaves the iron completely open for retrieval. At 90 degrees, the stirrups are performing at their maximum level: no leather burns, maximum retrieval and the greatest safety, as the stirrup tends to remain open allowing the dislodged rider to clear the stirrup safely and easily. This setting is preferable preset for Dressage, Endurance and Trail Riders as well as general flat riding applications. The Sport / Supper Sport Stirrup: The Sport was designed with the Jumper and Event Riders in mind. These stirrups are fantastic due to the sure grip - and less weight base.  Everyone can benefit from the sure grip-wide base, lower profile design and less weight.  The aluminum tread gives the rider more traction, stability and comfort due to a deeper platform for support thus reducing pressure under the foot. By using both stainless steel and aluminum metals, results in a stirrup that weighs less than the original model, while maintaining a traditional look for the show ring with unsurpassed strength and balance.  The MDC Stirrups are sized true with a opening of  4 ¼", 4 ½", 4 ¾" and 5 inch. Specify style and size.

Stirrup Leathers: It’s not easy to find good stirrup leathers.  These leathers have the flat stainless steel buckles, followed by thin, top grain leather sewn over a tough nylon web to ensure strength, thus avoiding annoying stretching and misshaping that happens to non-reinforced leathers. These leathers are thin, one inch wide, and come with coverlets for those who ride with their buckles down by the stirrup. Specify leather color and length (49" short, 55" standard, 61" long and 1" wide.) HVF Exclusive. Sold as a pair. Item # ST-LTH - Price $85.00

THIS is WHY we reinforce our leathers with NYLON!  Look how regular stirrups leathers stretch.  They become thinner and thinner in both length and thickness.  NOT SAFE!

Single Strap Stirrup Leathers: The only type of it's kind and sure to be copied (knocked off) at some point. These leathers were made for rider comfort with less bulk.  Each strap is one inch wide, 34 inches long and made of 8 oz top grade, #1 English bridle leather which is backed with nylon that is glued and sewn. All 16 holes are heat finished so no fraying of nylon occurs and all hardware is stainless steel, insuring a life time of use.  A bit tricky at first to put on and adjust, but once you get the way of it, by looping up and over, or on to your stirrup hanger bar and back through the double bar keeper, with the lower Conway buckle adjusted for your stirrup length it is a slick as slick can be. Sold as a pair of two, one for each side, select color of black or brown.  Item # ST-SL - Price $75.00

*SAFETY TIP*: For our young children we stripped out the heavy western fenders and replaced them with English leathers and Kwik-Out safety irons WHY? First let us look at the child’s leg. Children’s legs in many cases stick straight out from the horse. Kids have small weak legs. It takes every bit of effort for them just to keep their boots on, let alone, kick their horses’ sides hard enough to get them moving. Knowing that kids have short legs that do not drop down easily onto the horses’ sides and western fenders are thick, stiff, and hard to adjust tells us the child can’t "get his leg on the horse." Therefore, we put the English leathers on the saddle. They are soft, pliable and easily adjustable for the long or short legged rider. The child can easily move these leathers, for there is less bulk to move and more importantly the child can get his leg on the their horse - feeling the horse. We also put Kwik-Out safety stirrups on or you can use any iron with Toe Stoppers. We have found that there are no good western "safety" stirrups on the market for children, with the exception of the tapadero, covered western stirrup or Toe Stoppers. But these western set ups are still so hard for the kids to manipulate, due to the bulk of the western fender. Many times they can they can only get the tip of their boot in and do not have the downward pressure to hold their foot in the stirrup and subsequently lose their stirrup easily. With the English leathers and irons the kids can get their feet deep in the stirrup (iron), regardless of what boot they are wearing; and in the event of a spill either the iron kicks open or the Toe Stopper releases the child’s foot. From all that I have witnessed, this set up, by far, is the safest and most practical, user-friendly system. Please take my advice and make your child a better and a SAFER rider.
